04 · Thriving in the Southern Zone
Relocation, residency & daily life
Take the beautiful parts and the difficult parts seriously. Choose a realistic path, test everyday life and prepare questions that are specific to your family and plans.

In this chapter
Use a scouting trip to test ordinary days: shopping, working online, cooking, driving in rain and accessing services. A week of beaches cannot answer whether a location fits your ongoing life. Consider the wet season and what happens when things break or appointments take longer.
Keep monthly costs separate from startup costs. Phone and home internet are distinct lines in the sample budget. Include deposits, moving or shipping, furnishings and professional advice separately so a first-month spike does not masquerade as your ordinary monthly spending.
- What do I need to work reliably and access medical care?
- Which routines am I willing to change?
- What would make a steep or isolated home impractical for me?
- How will I manage language barriers and administrative appointments?
- What is my fallback if the first area or home does not suit me?
