01 · Before you arrive

Packing & what to import

Pack for humid everyday life, not just a holiday. Separate what you need on arrival from the household items worth sourcing carefully before a move.

Local shop with clothing, woven bags and home goods

In this chapter

Choose light, breathable clothes you are comfortable wearing repeatedly. Include rain protection, footwear with grip and something appropriate for appointments. Pack for the routines you expect—walking, working, shopping and laundry—not every imagined occasion.

Keep essential prescriptions in original packaging and check import requirements before travelling. Carry documents and essential medicine rather than entrusting them to checked luggage. Bring your preferred fragrance-free products for the first weeks if substitutions are difficult for you.

  • Breathable clothing and cotton sleepwear; a light layer for air-conditioned spaces.
  • Rain jacket or umbrella, sun protection and suitable insect protection used as directed.
  • Chargers, a power bank, glasses and a spare set of essentials.
  • A small supply of familiar toiletries, with liquids packed to airline rules.
